Old World in Seattle?!
During the pandemic lockdown days, I took the Littles to “get lost” in my car around Seattle a few times, just to get a change of scenery.
Seattle neighborhoods are all known for one thing or another, but the architecture throughout this income-tax-free zone is scattered, inconsistent, and often ill-maintained. At least the Space Needle just got a big facelift.
Of course there are iconic homes on Queen Anne, there is interesting architecture throughout the golf sanctuary nestled in the city that is Broadmoor, and of course, jaw dropping estates up and down the shores of Lake Washington and Puget Sound. But I wouldn’t be out-of-line in saying Seattle is not known for it’s architecture.
One notable home I first noticed on one of our Covid lockdown drives is back on the market, and somehow I don’t think the photos do this magnificent property justice.
Sam Hill House was build in 1909-10 in the Capital Hill neighborhood for it’s railroad executive and lawyer namesake, best remembered for his promotion of paved modern roads. Smart guy.
In 2018, big gun Seattle teams Stuart Silk Architects and Garret Cord Werner completed a major reno for the current owners. Who are they, you ask? Sam Jaradeh, a real estate guy who I may have had cocktails with in NYC, and Boris Nikolic who is Bill Gates’ bestie/advisor and the executor of Jeffrey Epstein’s will. If those Capital Hill walls could talk.
